Camagüey was founded near the north coast, in 1515 under the name of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe. It was moved inlands by its inhabitants who were running away of the pirates and corsairs attacks. The definitive move to the present-day location was done in 1528.

The city has preserved well its colonial architecture of huge houses with interior courtyards. In all of them You will find its signature "Tinajones" (pots made of red clay) which were extremely useful to store the water because the region was very dry.

Camagüey is a labyrinthine, well maintained and Catholic city. Characterized by "Tinajones" , narrow streets and its collection of colonial churches. Home of the renowned Ballet of Camagüey, one of the finest professional dance company in the world.
